How the Website Leak Score works
The Website Leak Score is a number from 0 to 100 that shows how well a homepage does on the checks that decide whether visitors find you, trust you and get in touch. Here is exactly how it is worked out.
The short version
Each check is worth points by how directly it can cost enquiries: Fix Now checks are worth 15, Fast Win checks 8 and Growth checks 5. Your score is the share of points your homepage earns. Checks that can’t apply to a site (for example tap-to-call when there is no phone number) are left out rather than counted as a pass or a fail.
Every check, and its points
| Area | Check | Points | What passes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Listed by search engines | 15 | The page does not tell search engines to leave it out (no “noindex” in the page or its headers). |
| Visibility | Page title | 8–15 | A title exists (15 points if it is missing altogether) and is 15–65 characters, so it is neither vague nor cut off in Google. |
| Visibility | Search description | 8 | A meta description exists, so you choose the snippet rather than Google. |
| Visibility | Main heading | 8 | The page has an H1 heading that says what it is about. |
| Visibility | Business details for search engines | 5 | Structured data (schema) describes the business, such as LocalBusiness. |
| Trust | Secure connection (HTTPS) | 15 | The homepage ends up on an https:// address. |
| Trust | Reviews or testimonials | 8 | Reviews, ratings or testimonials are mentioned on the page. |
| Trust | Business address | 5 | A UK postcode appears on the page. |
| Trust | Looks up to date | 5 | The copyright year is this year or last year (left out if there is none). |
| Trust | Privacy policy link | 5 | A link mentioning “privacy” exists. |
| Trust | No broken links | 8 | None of up to 15 links to the site’s own pages fails to load. |
| Conversion | Set up for mobile screens | 15 | A mobile viewport setting exists. |
| Conversion | Starts loading quickly | 8 | The page starts arriving within 2.5 seconds of our request. |
| Conversion | Phone number | 15 | A phone number or click-to-call link is on the page. |
| Conversion | Tap-to-call | 8 | The number is a tel: link (left out if there is no number). |
| Conversion | Clear way to enquire | 15 | There is an enquiry form, or a ‘contact’, ‘quote’ or ‘book’ button. |
| Conversion | Enquiry form on the page | 5 | The homepage itself has a form (left out if there is no way to enquire). |
| Conversion | Working contact page | 5 | If the homepage has no form, a linked contact page loads and has a form, phone number or email link. |
If the homepage doesn’t load at all, we don’t give it a score; the report says so instead.
What the score bands mean
- 80–100: strong. The basics are in place. Remaining items are usually refinements.
- 55–79: leaking some enquiries. One or two gaps are likely costing you enquiries.
- Below 55: leaking enquiries. Visitors are probably leaving before they get in touch.
Area scores
You also get a score for Visibility, Trust and Conversion, worked out the same way from the checks in each area. A low area score tells you where to look first.
Comparisons and benchmarks
You can compare your score with a competitor’s homepage on the same checks. Once we have scanned enough real websites, reports will also show the average score, and never before then.
Questions
Is a score of 100 a guarantee of enquiries?
No. The score only covers the checks listed here. A site can pass them all and still need better offers, prices or content. It is a starting point, not a promise.
Why did my score change?
Scores come from the live site. If your site changes, or a check such as speed varies on the day, the score can change. Your report shows your first score so you can see the difference.
Can the checks be wrong?
Yes, occasionally, for example on unusual page designs. Every finding shows its evidence so you can check it, and a person reviews each report.
